Most people think erotic connection is something you create in the bedroom — using the right technique, creating a certain mood, waiting for the moment you switch it on.
But that’s not how it works.
Erotic connection isn’t something you turn on. It’s something you are either cultivating… or eroding… all day long.
It’s not just when you’re naked in the bedroom. It’s in how you speak, how you listen, how you move around each other. How you hold each other in your awareness.
You are always shaping the relational field between you.
And over time, that field becomes either erotically alive… or flat.
The Game You Don’t Realise You’re Playing
Every couple is, in effect, playing a quiet, ongoing game.
Not always consciously, but always consistently.
It’s a game of movement toward… or away.
I always say to my clients that it’s a lot like a game of Snakes & Ladders.
There are big snakes and ladders — grand romantic gestures, or big fights, hurts and betrayals.
But it’s not the big ones that shape your relationship most.
It’s the accumulation of the small ones.
The problem is that most people are trying to climb ladders in the bedroom…
while sliding down snakes all day long.
The Subtle Snakes
Snakes can be obvious and dramatic — the big fights, hurts and betrayals. We know those should be avoided.
But just as, if not more, important are the subtle snakes. Not the big fights you remember, but the micro-moments you don’t.
Such as the distracted “mm-hmm” when your partner is speaking; the sarcastic edge in your tone; the eye roll; the phone that’s more interesting than the person in front of you; the irritation you swallow… but never actually process.
I could go on and on. And individually, they seem so small, but they accumulate. And over time, they create a relational atmosphere that feels tight, flat, guarded.
Which are not exactly the conditions where erotic energy naturally flows.
The Quiet Ladders
Ladders can be just as subtle. And just like the subtle snakes, they accumulate — for your relational betterment.
Such as a moment of genuine presence; a softening in your body when you turn toward them; a hand resting, not as a demand, but as a connection; or a look that says, I see you.
These small ladders are not performative or strategic (although they can be intentional). They are just… real.
These are the moments that build safety, warmth and trust.
And from that… desire begins to emerge, rather than needing to be forced.
Foreplay Starts Here
Foreplay doesn’t start in the bedroom. It starts in how you live together.
Or, as I like to call it — beforeplay.
It’s everything that happens before you even begin to be physically intimate.
All these ladders — a ‘good morning darling’, the tone of your voice over breakfast, the love heart emoji at the end of a text, greeting each other with true presence and a cuddle at the end of the work day, how you come back together after disconnection.
Beforeplay is the relational atmosphere you create before anything sexual even begins. And it matters more than most people realise.
Because when the field between you is warm, open, and alive you don’t have to work so hard to generate desire. It’s already there, waiting.
Most people are trying to improve their foreplay…
while completely ignoring their beforeplay.
The Real Question
So the question isn’t: “How do we have better sex?”
It’s: What are we repeatedly doing that brings us closer?
And what are we repeatedly doing that pulls us apart?
Where are the snakes that disconnect us and what are the ladders that connect us?
A Different Kind of Erotic Practice
This is the focus. Not performance or pressure.
It’s about awareness.
Because when you start to see the patterns — the subtle ways you co-create your relational environment for good or bad — something shifts.
You stop chasing connection… and start building it.
Yes, in some big ways, but so importantly in the small ways, moment by moment.
Until one day, you realise you’re living in what I call the Simmer Zone — that warm, alive space of ongoing connection. The erotic aliveness you’ve been trying to manufacture… is already there simply through the way you engage.
I invite you to stay with me longer in the Salon video below where I go deeper into this subject.
